IP address
OK, this is going to annoy someone I'm sure, but hey, would I be JonnyFrond without that ability?
How do I find out an IP address from a web address? used to be able to do it with Sam Spade, but that seems to be becoming more and more useless as we speak.
And yes I did search for this, but funnily enough IP is too short a word to seach with, and adding another letter for fun would not really help either.

I realize that both replies above about PING will do the trick for you, but here is another option I use for that kind of stuff: http://www.dnsstuff.com/

If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

There is also an alternative method which may be slightly more useful.
nslookup google.com
..will tell you Google's IP address; and
nslookup xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
..will tell you the server's domain name (if it is a server).

If it helps, I feel like such a nobend, but Deeboe has hit the nail on the head for me. By the way, can anyone tell me why my copy of sam spade can't find anything any more, it used to be so useful?

Are you talking about the desktop version? Yeah, it started losing its luster for me some time ago. I just keep the web-site bookmarked in my tools and use that.

Frond... Put a valid DNS server in the DNS server box at the top of the screen... It works better if it knows where to find a resolver...
