    you guys have any suggestions on how to further my knowledge on computers/networking?
    RTFM (read the f'ing manual). Read, read, read. Then study some more.

    RTFM won't help much. Eventually you'll probably figure out that netgear is your router and depending on your IP, you can probably get to it with a webbrowser at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 and you'll be met with a prompt for a username and password you may or may not know. If it's still the default you'll be able to find it, if not your dad will know but you won't. And somewhere on that web interface is probably a place to block certain sites or ports. So I think the people that said sit down with your dad had it right.
