Top five hacking moments on film
5. Independence Day: Using an old space ship as cover for two humans to infiltrate the alien mother ship and upload a virus to destroy it.
4. Hackers: Dumpster diving in the target company's trash in order to obtain financial data from printouts.
3. War Games: Password cracking the military computer system by studying its creator.
2. Ferris Bueller's Day Off: Faking a grandmother's death to get Ferris's girlfriend excused from school through multiple phone calls and answering machine recordings.
1. Star Wars: R2-D2 gaining access to the death star main computer and shutting down the garbage dispensers (remember the com link!).
I thought they were too funny not to post here..
That aside, the list is part of a better article called Social engineering reloaded, which is a worthwhile read.
Cheers,

I know! That's what I was amazed at too - although to be fair IIRC that scene didn't last too long
I haven't seen Swordfish, so can't comment on that. The second one on the list is horrible but hilarious

What about Hackers 2 - The Takedown (Story of Kevin Mitnick) ... Dramatized and Romantized (is that a word ) ... There's some hacking and social engineering in that.

American psycho...
He gets a guy drunk and drags him into his appartment which he had covered in plastic... he puts on some music and this puts a little swing in his step as he hacks away at the guy with an axe. Any sort of "social engineering" pretty much took a life of its own.
I beleave he was mistaken as the man mentioned above for most of the movie... and everyone was so stoned/drunk or caught up in their who's-who that they pretty much made lies about being with certain people at certain times. Puts Mitnick's phone antics to shame, IMHO.

I thought "Sneakers" had some compelling PC work going on.....
Tagline: We could tell you what it's about. But then, of course, we'd have to kill you.
Plot Outline: Complex but lighthearted thriller about computers and cryptography, government and espionage, secrets and deception and betrayal
