Another way to task manager please
Hello, Frond here again with another stuperior question.
Anyone know how to get into taskmanager using the run command?
I have a pc here that is so slow, it took nearly an hour just to open the control panel, and control alt delete does not work anymore. I think there are about a million things running on here and I want to stop them. Hijack this log coming when I have done what I can.

I have a feeling that Mr. Frond might not be running his XP box as an admin or, he's got XP Home, (which I'm not familiar with), that doesn't allow those commands... But I'll be corrected on that by others if I'm wrong...
If not, Mr. Frond's box is fsked up royally... Which, to be ruthlessly honest, wouldn't surprise me because, Methinks, Mr. Frond is trying to run before he can walk... and I think he trips from time to time...

It's xp.
I remember from my windows 98 days that there was a something config that would pull up a box like task manager, and on one of the tabs, there was startup processes, where you could remove the stupid things like messenger and the like.
Does XP have that? I want to try to remove it that way first then as a last resort I will disable them in spybot.
The stupid cow threw away the installation discs didn't she. I am thinking that the important ones to find would be the graphics driver and the USB and networking drivers. Is this a road that is worth going down, as a learning process, or is it really too stressfull and annoying

Jonny........................what OS?.............I suspect this is not your usual machine?
What are the physical specifications?
How much free hard drive space have you got?
Have you tried safe mode, defrag, then have a look at what is in your startup file?
Have you run a checkdisk on the HDD?
Also get: http://www.winpatrol.com
It is a sort of security tool but I find that I use it more for diagnostics and fault finding these days
Then you have a rat hunt a.k.a. as "clean out the crapware"
Give that lot a go and let us know how you get on.

Hi
Neg's answer works with XP home as well, and as nihil stated, if you can get into safe mode, you can have a look at your processes there.
Sounds like you may have a lot of "startups" trying to queue up and it is hogging the resources.
get this Startup Panel if you can and edit your startups....
This little app will allow you to avoid using msconfig which when you use asks you to reboot all the time and your stuck in either a diagnostic startup or selective, but the startup panel allows you to remove, edit, delete to your hearts content without the reboots...
You can get to your services through run\mmc then open windows services.
Luck...
