Source of IP Locator - HELP!

I would like to know the source of the IP locator. Some IP locators show us in the proper location -- Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA. Arin also shows our range as a part of UUNET, but the anti-online IPLocator along with some others show CUBA. This causes problems for us trying to access some US sites. There has to be some kind of source that these incorrect locators are all pulling from that we can update. Any ideas?

    The AO IP locator shows:

(65.213.175.97) is located in La Habana, Ciudad De La Habana (province), Cuba.

    Incorrect Locators:

    Correct Locators:

    http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm

    Arin WhoIs:

Thanks to any that can help!

I'm confused. If you have sites that provide you the correct info, why do you care about the ones that don't?

Because the ones that don't could lead me to the source. Perhaps they are all pulling from the same outdated database, wherever or whatever that may be... perhaps if I could fix or contact that source, the other problems would be solved.

We've had problems with sites such as Paypal and other sites that verify your country IP before allowing you to proceed. Of all countries, we had to get CUBA -- not the best one to be due to trade restrictions, etc.

Those geographic locators are notoriously inaccurate. I personally would not do business with any outfit that used them, as it is highly unprofessional IMO.

AO says that I am in Marina Del Rey, California
The next one on your list actually got the UK

Of the other three, one admitted that they haven't got a clue, one got the UK but suggested Bletchley, and the third thought I was in Toronto, Ontario!

There is no central or definitive source of geographic information so there is nothing for you to correct

I tracked you down to Miami, Florida or the surrounding vicinity. Is this accurate?

As Nihil stated there is no source. Although there are a certain number of authoritative DNS servers (which I think they are getting the locations from, with exceptions), you cannot change the entries. If they are not getting the location by record matching DNS entries, then the locators are using an internal database of their own variety and who knows where they get their data.

Yes, that is accurate. I was hoping to find some kind of trail for the inaccurate ones.. maybe they are querying UUNET and not ARIN and somehow UUNET has CUBA in one of their data fields (I notice that both our UUNET assigned blocks show from CUBA on the inaccurate locators)

It would be nice to know what AO's locator is looking at, or how it is determining our location because it could shed some light. Does AO have its own internal database?

I think that these databases are built up from locally collected data and stuff from sites that collect country and city data.

For the one that had "no idea" where I was, I was able to update their database.

I would guess that your problem might come from Cubans living in Florida. They probably put "Cuba" to get sites to put up their Spanish language version. That would match your local IP blocks to Cuba?

When people go to Florida, I always thought they were told "HELLO, and Welcome to Cuba"

    Here is your answer:

They are using CAIDA's NetGeo database that has not been updated for several years and is grossly inaccurate

    http://netgeo.caida.org/perl/netgeo.cgi

It shows me as being in Marina Del Rey and you as being in Havana

We've had problems with sites such as Paypal and other sites that verify your country IP before allowing you to proceed
Personally I wouldn't deal with them and would write to sufficient sites and publications to make the tight fisted little incompetent gob$h1tes the laughing stock of the internet.

I would also report them to your ISP who may have enough legal muscle to get them to change the error of their ways.

They have NO EXCUSE there are a number of providers of current and relatively accurate data out there..................trouble is they charge for their services
