hmmmm...well, if you told everyone to search google to solve their problems, and if most everything imaginable can be found on google...(thinking if a=b, & b=c, a must equal c) what is the purpose of AO? isn't it so that the better of us can help the.....less better? I am a newbie, granted, but even as a newbie I am helping others everyday. If I stopped helping people and just told them to google their problems, then I would not have the great relationships with people that I do today nor any of the other benefits of helping others. If one has a "go to" guy or gal, then that saves a bunch of time and sometimes money.
However........I do agree that one should seek the information with the intent to learn it. Not just a quick fix. I believe that people should help themselves in this way.\
so, senior members, or members in general of AO.....do you agree, or disagree? Why? (I might have to have to move this to another thread if I get a bunch of responses, maybe I should have done it in the first place...)
there's always a way in...

Hi tinker,
I mean, I look at the newbie questions as a place to avoid XD.
What is XD?
(errr, should I have googled ?)

Well, ultimately you want people to be able to help themselves. So, after a certain period of time it's probably appropriate to start giving gentle nudges to people that they should avail themselves of available resources. For example, if someone asks a "newbish" question like, "What' the best Windows AV," you could say, "Here are some options I found through Google," and give them the link. After a few times, most people will get the message that this is a way they can find information themselves.

When I do have issues/questions Google is usually one of the first places I do go to (interesting to me how "Google" has become an integrated part of the internet lexicon). I do agree with the comment that some people have problems forming proper queries and may be using the wrong wording/terminology.
With Google however, sometimes you do get conflicting information or what you do find may not completely provide the answer you needed. In those cases, I have searched the threads here. If I still don't find the answer I would post my question and wait for answers/suggestions.
IMO there is a comfort level here based upon the breadth of experience of the posters and they would either reaffirm what was found or offer suggestions/methods that people wouldn’t necessarily think of and may be the reason for several of the questions asked.
IMO the “What’s the best ____?” type questions should maybe be pointed not necessarily to Google but to specific sites where those types of questions are answered and sites that one has found to be useful. (i.e., a site that was mentioned in another thread was Spyware Warrior )
Wise men talk because they have something to say;
fools, because they have to say something.

A lot of times newbs are really struglling to find a solution to a specific problem.They also may not be aware that a search on google may be what they are in need of.
I only came across Ao because of a recommendation of a friend.And it was by reading the forums and the good advice given that I only discovered the value of google.So please try not to be too hard on us who may not be as experienced.
\"Those who profess to favor freedom, yet depreciate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical; but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.\"

That's what AO is for (as long as it is legal). Why don't you find the right forum for your questions and ask?

<==== Noob
I think IT pros etc. often take the language for granted. I can Google for hours and just not understand.
For example, I have been trying for months to download slack Linux and install it. I still havent, but I am confident that a senior member could walk me through it. Being able to ask questions when you dont understand a concept is invaluble.
Ive learned far more from noobie posts, tutorials and searches on AO than on Google any day!!!!!
