explorer.exe utilizing all available resources
My cousin messed up her computer and is now expecting me to fix it. explorer.exe is consuming 99% of the processor resources starting a few moments after the OS loads and will not stop. Killing the process and restarting it is effective for about a minute then the explorer.exe process again runs out of control. It is the same situation when booting into safe mode under her and the administrators account. Norton antivirus is installed and up to date however it is unable to find anything in full system scans. I tried using checkpoint to revert the system back to a previous point however going back several months prior to the issue appearing it advises that their have been no changes to the system. I have used an adware removal tool I cant remember which one at the moment and after updating its definitions and running a scan it did pick up some adware which was removed however the problem is still present. I am thinking that since the issue is present whether booting into safe mode or not, under multiple user accounts that explorer.exe has in some way been corrupted. Or could it be possible that this was the result of some kind of conflict between norton and explorer.exe? I am only throwing that in their because I am advised that the issue came about soon after norton being installed.
Let me know if you have any thoughts?
OS is windows XP home edition SP2 on what I think was a compaq laptop but cant remember the last part for sure as I dont have it sitting in front of me.

HEllo mate - the first thing I would do is; GO to the RUN prompt and typr eventvwr.msc and then take a look in the application log to see if there is any entries in it relating to explorer, depending on what is in there depends what action you can take next but it sounds like a repair of explorer could be best!

Hi
1. Boot into safe mode with "networking" and go to Trend Micro Housecall and let it run.
2. Download Stinger from McAfee and let it run.
explorer - explorer.exe - Process Information
Process File: explorer or explorer.exe
Process Name: trojan.w32.Codered
Description:
explorer.exe is a process which is registered as a trojan. This Trojan allows attackers to access your computer from remote locations, stealing passwords, Internet banking and personal data. It is a registered security risk and should be removed immediately.
Processes
Virus Precaution:
The original file from Microsoft gets placed at C:WINDOWSSystem32explorer.exe . if you find it anywhere else then you should be suspicious for sure.
Luck..
Additional Info...
Edit: you could if you have the CD's Uninstall Norton, disconnect from the net and see how the pc responds, see if explorer.exe is maxing out again, if not then possibly Norton is the reason (IMHO usually is)..Norton Uninstall Tool

I ran the above steps and the issue is still present. I got another copy of explorer.exe from a good system and after verifying the version numbers I swapped them and that didnt fix it. I briefly glanced at the logs and didnt see anything that was immediately obvious. I will take a better look next time but pressed for time today so couldnt get more information. Let me know if you have any more suggestions.... Appreciate the help!!!!!

Sounds to me like an IRC bot that is running rampant. If none of the above works for you. Go to the sysinternals site and download TCPView. Be sure you're an admin when you run it.
Look for the rouge explorer.exe process and right click it to see where it's spawning from. Go there and delete the file once you kill the process.
Now, this file is called from the registry usually from here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Go there and look for a key that fires this malware app. It will reference explorer.exe wherever you deleted it from.
This *should* be enough to kill it, however, it has been seen where these things anchor deeper than this.

Below is a copy of the HijackThis log. Let me know what you notice. I haven't tried uninstalling Norton yet because with the system in its current state I dont know how well a reinstall would go and dont want to leave the system more vulnerable than it already is. However if this log doesnt expose the issue then I am thinking that is what I will do next. Thanks for the help and I am sorry for all of the garbage that you have to pick through in that log.
Thanks!!!!

At first glance all looks ok except these three:
O20 - Winlogon Notify: NavLogon - C:\WINDOWS\
O20 - Winlogon Notify: rqrpq - C:\WINDOWS\system32\rqrpq.dll
O20 - Winlogon Notify: WgaLogon - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\WgaLogon.dll
Couldn't make anything of these.. Perhaps another AO'er can shed some light on it?

Hi,
The first and last ones look "OK". They are Norton AV and Windows Genuine Advantage. I haven't the faintest idea what the middle one is
