    new hardware?

a couple of weeks ago i changed the dvdrw drive (toshiba) on my comp. on power up the it recognised the drive in the "new hardware found" and everything went smoothly. after all was settled down i plugged in the printer (lexmark). the comp found that again and installed the printer.
both, the drive and the printer are working fine.

now the problem, everytime i switch on the computer, a message comes up saying "found new hardware" then it looks up drivers for the printer, which it thinks is from "toshiba".

i went into control panel> printers, deleted all the printers present and reinstalled the printers. and still the message comes up upon startup. and if i cancel it it says the "new hardware might not work properly" and just by chance if i plug the printer in a different usb, it dont work.
how do i get rid of this message?

Isnt there a little tick on the window saying something like

"Dont ask me about this hardware again???"

Just ignore the "hardware may not work properly"

    Whats in device manager....???

    any "phantom' devices??

have tried that tick in"dont ask me for this again"
the message comes up again on startup.

there are no phantom devices in device manager. nothing with a cross or a question mark with it.

One thing I can think of that hasnt been mentioned yet. go to start-run-msconfig-startup. In that list look and see if anything related to your printer or "add new hardware" boots when you start windows. if so, disable it and see if that takes the message away next time you restart.

nope, fully updated. and no updates for the motherboard.

checked msconfig. one thing that stood out is one "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" with no "startup" item and no "command"
there are other items associated with this location also.

checked with regedit, after Run there is "optionalComponents" folder.

ok. i unchecked that one and restarted.
the message came back and the comp wanted a restart again. then another. i have a tuneup utilites program that makes a back up. i switched to this to prevent restarting.

checked msconfig again. that key is not present anymore. but the comp's still trying to look for the printer.

the comp thinks that the dvd drive is the printer.
i uninstalled the dvd drivers from "device manager" and it started looking for the printer.
    and the printer stopped working.
