    problem with win_xp

    hiii

i am using dual boot system of xp and linux(fedora 4.1) but it has so happened that suddenly it had stopped taking any software of microsoft even the xp has been corrupted and it has left only with fedora, but the same hard disk is working properly in other computer as primary one. so i thought it may be the failure of some bios settings or maybe motherboard, a bit of confusion.
plz sugest something for it.thnx in advance.

do you still have the install CD for XP ?
is it a 'genuine' copy ?

can you do a CD based repair ?

can you access XP at all ?
which bootloader do you have ?

I don't know which takes precedence MS or grub

    Hmmmm???????????

but the same hard disk is working properly in other computer as primary one
Do you mean that if you put the HDD into another machine it will dual boot properly?

I do not think that it is your motherboard. That would normally stop you booting anything, and Fedora still works?

Similarly, I don't think that it is the BIOS, as that has generally done its work before Grub shows up. Does it report the HDD details correctly?

for booting to windows we need everytime a bootable windows cd.
Do you mean that you can boot windows, but only with CD support?

I am a little unclear as to exactly what your situation is, but it sounds rather like a corrupted master boot record (MBR) at this stage.

I would be inclined to run the manufacturer's HDD diagnostics over the drive, just to make sure that your problem does not have physical origins. Obviously if the HDD is on the way out there is not much point trying to fix the software.

Not sure what you are saying here. Are you saying that you can get into windows but cant get any MS software to run (Word, Excel, or PowerPoint)? Is it that Windows XP crashed and you can no longer boot into XP. If Windows XP did crash is there a blue screen of death? Can you get to the screen that has you choose the OS you wish to boot from? Its highly unlikely that the BIOS is causing the issue. If you believe its a hardware issue I would look at the RAM first, If you have one bad chip and one good chip usually XP will crash. I'm not positive as to what your copy of Linux would do, but I believe it would still run.

i had a similar problem on one of my boxes here, grub would load, and underground desktop would boot no probs, but when ever i would choose winxp it would give the NTDLR or what ever it's called missing or corrupt.

So just stick in your xp install disk, let it load up, and the menu that let's you install or do a repair screen, choose the repair option then choose the correct drive, then do a FIXMBR and it should solve the prob.

Well that's what fixed me issue..

    cheers

    Hi shals

    "hey nihil

Well, "corruption" isn't an absolute and total thing. Part of the MBR is the Master Partition Table. If that suffered some corruption I would imagine that it would be possible to load one OS and not another.

A further thought would be that you have a corrupted Registry? as this is a Windows only thing it would fit the symptoms that you describe?

If you load the HDD into another machine as Master, does it at least get you to Windows error messages or do you have identical problems?

If it does the same, that rules out the MoBo, BIOS, and RAM

Please run diagnostics on the HDD and try what .:front2back:. suggests.
