Sysinternals: On My Way to Microsoft

    Source: Sysinternal Blog

ím very pleased to announce that Microsoft has acquired Winternals Software and Sysinternals. Bryce Cogswell and I founded both Winternals and Sysinternals (originally NTInternals) back in 1996 with the goal of developing advanced technologies for Windows. Weíve had an incredible amount of fun over the last ten years working on a wide range of diverse products such as Winternals Administratorís Pak, Protection Manager, Defrag Manager, and Recovery Manager, and the dozens of Sysinternals tools, including Filemon, Regmon and Process Explorer, that millions of people use every day for systems troubleshooting and management. Thereís nothing more satisfying for me than to see our ideas and their implementation have a positive impact.

Thatís what makes being acquired by Microsoft especially exciting and rewarding. Iím joining Microsoft as a technical fellow in the Platform and Services Division, which is the division that includes the Core Operating Systems Division, Windows Client and Windows Live, and Windows Server and Tools. Iíll therefore be working on challenging projects that span the entire Windows product line and directly influence subsequent generations of the most important operating system on the planet. From security to virtualization to performance to a more manageable application model, thereís no end of interesting areas to explore and innovate.

So whatís going to happen to Winternals and Sysinternals? Microsoft is still evaluating the best way to leverage the many different technologies that have been developed by Winternals. Some will find their ways into existing Microsoft products or Windows itself and others will continue on as Microsoft-branded products. As for Sysinternals, the site will remain for the time being while Microsoft determines the best way to integrate it into its own community efforts, and the tools will continue to be free to download.

Personally, I remain committed to the Sysinternals and Windows IT pro communities and so Iíll continue to blog here, to write about Windows technologies, and to speak at conferences. Until I know my Microsoft email address and post it you can continue to contact me at mark@sysinternals.com.

Iím looking forward to making Windows an even better platform for all of us!

All I can say is ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww... Download those tools you use now while you can.

I gather you think this is bad thing, some of the utilities from sysinternal are great and it would be great to have some of these programs integrated into Windows if it happens!

Virtual PC still seems a great program since Microsoft bought that and modified it, unless you think M$ will just shutdown sysinternals down and we will never see any of them great utilities again

I will take your advise and download all the utilities - Some of them are really good like process explorer - Won't want to lose that

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Forget the above post - Microsoft have absolutely screwed the site up (Unless it everyone hitting site!), as I can't download the utilities I really dislike M$ now !!!

It's so funny how so many people realize that these tools are unlikely to be available. As I type this, I'm waiting for the laggy Sysinternals web page to load...

What does it say about public perception of Microsoft?

The guy is talking about how he has cool new challenges ahead in his career... If he wants a real challenge why doesn't he work on a version of Windows that doesn't need a reboot for every update.

Hmmm well it looks like the content on the site is getting pulled offline. i can only access the index page on the site.

all the other pages don't even load up just give me time out errors.

Well it obviously did not take MicroSoft long to pull it offline..

I'm in and am able to navigate around, but the site's very slow. I imagine there's a bit of a run on the site.

edit -- I'm downloading files OK.
