    Member Activation

I'm not really sure how this all works...but...

How many more activation emails get forgotten about these days? Lets consider the time it takes for an account to be reviewed and fully activated... you know if you don't catch it just in the time, those hotmail junk-boxes usually delete them within a day or so. Seems like it takes about a month for an account to be reviewed and fully activated does it not? I feel that if anything... it drives would-be posters away. Considering how slow things have gotten you'd think that someone would be trying to bring in some posts (not to mention traffic.) That doesn't seem to be happening though.

Is it true that you've made all these changes just to keep |The|Specialist at bay?

Is this based on any actual events (someone you know tried to register here but was forced to wait a month), or just speculation? A month sounds like... umm... 30 days or so

On the same note: it's funny that yours is only the first complaint - but then again, those who could be complaining, can't

I agree that it might drive some away, but those who make it are the ones who are determined and, dare I say it, destined to be proud AO'ers!

Just curious as to what was happenning...it was brought up, and it was something I wasn't aware of...so..I thought I would ask what it was about...

a month seems like a long time to get approval...really, what is the point? I can see it if it takes that long to investigate a wannabe...but...if you can verify in 2 days, what really is the point of the other 28?

I'm getting confused here... I just went through the registration process again to make sure... I don't see anywhere where it says that it takes 30 days for an account to be activated... where did you come up with this number?

    Peace,
    HT

    Hi HT,

So...how long does it take? That's what I'm asking...if I already knew there would be no reason to ask.

When you say you went through the registration process I assume it was under a different nick and possibly a different IP so it wouldn't be identified as you.

So..how long is the period between registration and posting?

I took less then 24 hours for this account to be registered by me, then it was approved, i was sent a email telling me that i was now allowed to participate in discussions.

I registered this account before i had the other one "banned". Negative had a different user name that i was planning on using, he didn't know that i had registered this username until i sent a pm from this account, then verified it with a Pm from the f2B account.

So it's not as though this account was rushed through or anything.

    cheers

Thanks AT! That's part of what I wanted to know...but...

i sent a pm from this account, then verified it with a Pm from the f2B account.
that was because of direct verification...you in essence verified that it was you...which probably sped up the process...what I want to know is how long does it take to verify a new account.

    Hi EG~,

From my observations of the "newest members" section of the Statistics page and looking at "who's online" (it shows you people registering) I would say that the average turnaround is within 24 hours, and certainly no more than 48. It may take a day longer at the weekend or when there is a national vacation?

I do believe that you have raised another possible issue though As we all know, spam has become more and more of an issue over the past two or three years, and ISPs, mail providers and corporations/organisations have tended to implement progressively more aggressive filters.

I wonder if the AO response might be getting trapped by some of these? I could see this happening where blocking is done on a geographical basis using IP address blocks.

In reality though, I would have thought that someone savvy enough to want to join AO would know what their e-mail provider was doing and at least look to see what goes into the spam folder.

I am aware, like yourself, that there are a large number of accounts apparently "awaiting confirmation"................... that is NOT confirmation by us, that is confirmation by the applicant. In other words, the account has been approved.

    Hope that helps

Yes but i sent the first Pm from this account, after it got through the approval process. Then once i clicked the link in the email that was sent after the initial approval process saying that the account had been approved, and all i had to do on my end was click the link and make the activation complete.

then once i had completed the activation process i then sent the PM. Logged out, logged in to the f2B account, then sent the final PM to Negative, to proove that yes it was me, and it wasn't a spoof attempt.
And then logged straight out, logged back in to this account and within 20minutes or so the other account was closed..

so if anything it took less then 24hours..

If you're only asking, then why all the wild assumptions about it taking 30 days? Wouldn't a better question have been "How long does it take for a member to be activated?", rather than "It takes 30 days for a member to be activated! How long does it take for a member to be activated?"
