Boot CD that doesn't write to the hard drive
Does anyone know what BCD's like Bart's write to the hard drive upon booting? I've been trying to create a CD with DriveSpy on it (with Bart's cdromsi), and it works perfectly fine, but when I try the usual tricks of hex-editing command.com (to change the c: references to a: ) and io.sys (to take out DriveSpace references), the disk won't boot anymore... any ideas or pointers? I guess I'm basically looking for a forensically sound (CD) boot image...

Hi,
There are a shed load here:

I suggest you look at the ones marked "forensics" first, then maybe the diagnostics ones?

I know I could use any of those, but I'm trying to make my own
What I basically need is nothing but a bootable CD that gives me a DOS prompt without touching the hard drive... I've got the "bootable CD that gives me a DOS prompt" part, but not the "without touching the hard drive" part.

I know that EnCase offers a free boot CD....

Maybe you can get some insight from the code they use to help you figure out why yours is "touching" the drive.
