    New computer

Hi, I'm planning on buying a new computer and I want it to be very fast, however I only want to buy a mother board, processor and some memmory. What do you think would be the best choice, I'd like dual processor technology but I think that's a bit too expensive, or am I wrong?

    Hmmm,

    1. What are the specifications of your current system?
    2. What sort of games, and how frequently (% usage)?
    3. What operating system?
    4. How long do you expect his machine to last?
    5. Do you expect it to be upgradable?
    6. What storage requirements?
    7. Will the machine be acting as a server? If so, for what?
    8. Is this a complete system, or are you expecting to support legacy peripherals, if so, what?

    Dual-core cps's are not expense, maybe $150 for a Pentium D 3ghz dual-core cpu.
Mobo, obviously this has to be compatible with the cpu, but id recommend buying one that supports sata, ddr2 and 64 bit os'es, this is the way forward. You're taking around $200 for a decent one.
Get yourself a stick of ddr2 ram, around $130.
Most mobo's that implement the new technologies, such as ddr2 and sata, you can also use with your old h/w i.e. ddr ram and ide hdd, so you're not going to have to go out and buy a new hdd and ram straight away but if you've got a $2000 budget then go for it...new 200gb sata hdd should cost you around $120.
If you're planning on playing games, you will need a pretty good graphics card, id say a 512mb nvidia, would do just fine!

Be careful? at the moment hardware is in advance of most software so these "kiddies bragging rights" thingies are pretty much irrelevant?

Also, I would hope that you noticed that I asked what he had at present , It might be that an inexpensive upgrade is the best solution at the moment?

At the end of the day, the whole system has to be balanced, or you are just wasting money?
