Mouse is acting crazy

I have serious problem with my optical mouse. pls help I REALLY NEED SOS.
Here goes the problem. From recently my mouse is acting very strange. Its an optical Logitech mouse when system boots at the welcome screen mouse just freezes and it wont do anything even if I get to the desktop. But if I keep on moving the mouse as it is booting it will work for sometime but in between it will freeze as it is in use. It freezes very badly it wont do anything by any how I need to shut down my computer. ..... In device manager there is no conflict everything shows in good condition.
STEPS I`VE TRIED

But still all my efforts meets failure

Is it a new device or one you have had for a while?
Changed the batteries?
What surface are you using it on?
Any electrical equipment in the way or the receiver?

My bet is some sort of interference.......

Start/Control Panel/Mouse Icon right click and open, check Hardware, should be able to troubleshoot from there, also in the properties tab there are advanced settings.

Have you tried it in safe mode How to start in Safe Mode see if you get the same problems.

H'm.. no-one suggested checking the hardware on another PC yet..

Is the mouse a wireless mouse?
Does the optical light stay on when it isn't working?
How are you connecting the mouse? PS/2 or USB?
If PS/2 are you using a USB-PS/2 adapter that seems to come with most mice now?

May be a bad mouse as suggested....or the problem may be the surface you are using it on....optical mice need texture to properly read...and function...if the surface is too reflective or smooth...the optical mouse will...bounce around or have problems reading...maybe causing your issue

edit.whats the OS, type of mouse...and are you using an updated driver...is it wireless??? any other wireless devices??

Hmmmm,

It could be all sorts of things, and you have some excellent suggestions.

I would say:

1. Try mouse on another system.
2. Try another mouse on the problem system.
3. If it is USB, try another USB port......you should have at least 2?
4. If it is USB, try unplugging it then connecting it after you have booted.
5. Make sure that it is clean, not badly scratched and use some different surfaces, if not a specialised optical mouse one as suggested.

Incidentally, how old is it............. mice do "die" you know

Thanks for your suggestion.
This is an new mouse, optical mouse connected to PS/2 port. I have tried to change all the kind of mouse pads with different coating but no satisfied result. I have also tried by connecting the same mouse on different machine but same thing its not working. Any other suggestion than buying a new one. pls help

In which case I would return it...............some kit is D.O.A. and it sounds as if you have one there

It's probably the surface... I know that on my desk, there's this one spot where my mouse screws around ALWAYS when it's on there.
