    Hmmmm,

I guess that Joe is spot on, as it seems to have sort of faded into the background since it was taken off the front page, so to speak?

I still believe that it has its defensive uses, given that we are a 24/7 International site. Sure we have a lot more moderators now, but they have other things to do, and the timezones can still be a pain?

I also believe that they have a useful function in allowing one to say "thanks" without apparently postwhoring (not that anything has ever inhibited me) and in encouraging starter members.

    Just a couple of thoughts

Yeah, the reputation system can be used only for "thank you" if you adjust the values to be meaningless, but then again, why do that when there is a PM system?

A very valid question, so I will try my best:

    1. Private messages are perhaps a bit more personal..............the reputation/antipoints system was/is a bit more "proper" and "formal"...........hey just kicking ideas around here...............

    2. I still believe that they should pack a punch when needed. Most of us are not paid for moderating, so it helps if we know that there is a "backstop" (you guys play different ball games from us?).

My observations over the past 5 years (not all as a member) is that Trolls don't last more than 5 posts on average, and that is with the members handling it

Or do I have to shave my moustache in from the sides and dye it black?

Well the point of members being able to ban troll is a very valid one. I'm a bit reluctant to remove that here. On most of our other forums, I endeavor to have at least a single aussie mod, preferably more than 1. I find I sleep better

One downfall to that (in the past anyway I have not been posting here very much) is sometimes people ban users for the sake of the difference of opinion. That may have changed over the years, so I cannot say what things are like now.

No matter, because the benefits outweigh the downsides.

Well I am and will be here much more often than in the past and I would police that kind of thing. All anyone needs to do is use the contact us link at the bottom of every page to reach me.

    nods

Yeah, that is helpful in case something goes wrong. Alright, I will leave this thread alone now. The rep system has a nice search feature to find questionable entries and the like. I like it... problem is, on my crappy forums, nobody uses it, so I never had a reason to police abuses.

Well on most of our forums we have it off. I think this is 1 of only 3 across the 30 we publish which has reps turned on.

I think all of the abuse that people are worried about was stopped with the AP system by making it not anonymous. When it was anonymous people would do all kinds of weird things with it. Once the receiving user knew who it was coming from I think the abuse stopped. If JPnyc, calling him just JP seems like a disservice to me, says he will be around to watch out for abuse then it really doesn't matter.
