    AVG Anti-Spyware - Any good?

Well, first let me wish everyone the very best for 2007.

I have searched, however, there is nothing to be found regarding AVG's Anti-Spyware. So, I thought I'd canvass the opinion of the AntiOnline community, as I know I'll get some worthy responses.

Right then - over to you lot!

I went ahead and voted "Yes -- It's top banana" because you didn't
put it's "a very good app" option in there (it certainly rates better
than a sorta alright app). I think Spyware Doctor and SpySweeper
are very good apps that compare favorably. IMHO.

Hey, best wishes to you too,

I think you mean AVG's anti-virus, cause I could'nt find antispyware. If not i'm sorry.
I've been using AVG's anti-virus (free edition) for a while now, and I haven't experienced any problems with it yet. I;m not sure how much it detects, but since I use it, I have less problems with my pc.
Hope this helps you a bit.

No, AVG do an anti spyware tool as well, you can download it here.

I have it on my PC. It's very thorough and includes real time protection, but I agree, a poll option somewhere in between "it's top banana" and "It's sort of alright" would have been good.

AVG AntiSpyware (aka Ewido) is a very good app and may well be the
top dog. I ran it on a W2K server where I save viruses, keyloggers and
ass't other rogues, and it was turning them up in zip files. In fact, I was
a bit taken aback at first thinking I was badly infected before I figured
out what was going on. Guess I'll have to encrypt those rogues to keep
them from turning up in the scans.

AVG/Ewido runs a deep scan, maybe deeper than any.

Yes, that happened to me as well. It gave the impression I had god knows what on my PC, but on investigation it was all harmless stuff I actually wanted (things like the SP2 fix to have more than 10 open connections).

Panda did the same to me when I did an online virus scan and even my AVG anti spyware program decided all my visual studio projects were viruses (in reality about as harmful as a stuffed toy) when I first ran it.

    Keep 'em coming ...

Thanks for the responses so far.

OK, ok, Alright then, I guess I should have added another poll choice between "Top banana," and "Sort of alright." Sorry!

Is there any way to edit a poll?

I have edited it for you

AVG Antispyware isn't well known right now, but it used to be called EWIDO. That I have used, and found it very thorough. It did not cause any conflicts and did not seem to be a resource hog.

Moira, I might be getting confused here, but I believe that you can set the "sensitivity" and get it to report "suspicious items". If you do that you will almost certainly get things that you want brought to your attention.

You then have to interpret the results..............rather like HijackThis!

Many thanks for your expert intervention there nihil. I must slow down when posting so that my posts become a bit more considered. He he.

So far, I have found AVG Anti-Spyware to work unobtrusively - even with it's "Resident Shield!" The resident shield is what you pay for, along with automatic updates, when you buy the full version. I must type that I'm considering that!

    You are welcome,

I just checked a copy of EWIDO.................. it will scan for "possibly unwanted software" if you tell it to..................this will probably include some false positives, but it is meant as a warning for you to decide on.

It updated itself and advised me that I should get the latest AVG anti spyware upgrade...............free of charge!...............and this is a free edition that I am using anyway!!!
