Go to Run --> enter "netsh diag gui" with out the quotes. Click on "set scanning options" and make sure everything is checked (especially verbose). Now click on "scan your system".
Review the information under "Modems and Network Adapters".
Expand all of them and see if you have any "Failed" items.
If failed, what failed? Post it, PPPpost it so we can see.
Is the laptop Static or DHCP?
If Dynamic what is the IP addy?
Did you "JUST" plug it in to the network?
