One thing you can try that doesn't require any software to do it, but it can be a bit of an annoyance at times especialy if you forget how to do it. If you right click on the folder you want to deny access to and go to the security tab, remove everyone from the list. and apply the settings. now when anyone tries to click on the folder it will give an error message. cant remember the exact error message as im at work rite now and dont have full access to test . When you want to get into the folder just reverse the process, by adding yourself back to the list. You might have to claim ownership of the folder with the admin account depending on the rights your account has. but that should do the job your trying to do.

If your looking to keep personal data safe I would use TrueCrypt. A simple locked folder will not give you "complete" security, but if your looking to just to discourage people from the folder then i would go with the posts above.

Not sure how secure it has to be. If it is just to keep the kids from looking at it, perhaps rar it and use a password.

i would assume u have multiple people using this computer. if so create a new account for the other users and make them limited. then do what moxquito says. that will ensure that u folders r private and that nobody can make unprivate but u. except if they go into safe mode and do it from there. in that case i would pass protect the admin login as well.
