newbie with a ? about voip security

I hope this is the right place for this question. I have a cdma wireless internet service in China. The service is hecka convenient but is not fast enough for Skype. Is there an option that will work with a 40 kb/sec connection?

Also, how do programs like Ventrillo and Teammaster and Skype compare in terms of security? MSN? Yahoo? Is there something like PGP keys that can be used with VOIP to improve the security? I hope it is OK to mention names on this site.

-Is your service 3g? If so you should be able to get up to 2mbps
-If you cant get anything faster you would need a service that uses less bandwidth. This of course would compromise the quality of the call. It is easiest to choose your codec using a program like teamspeak. You can set each room to have different codecs you can try them all out.

I do not think any of them are encrypted but from what I hear they are working on an encryption plugin for skype.

The answer is no, unfortunately no VOIP or even IM to IM voice chat (that I know of) works well with that slow a speed. MSN msgr claims to voice chat with anything over 33kbps but don't you believe it. You'd have better success using smoke signals.

In fact, VOIP had drop outs even when I was on 768kbps DSL. It really likes 2mb and up, and UL speed of at least 500kbps.

I know teamspeak can use multiple codecs depending on what you set it up as it can use speedex/clep/gsm

    http://www.speex.org/comparison/

According to that the speedex codex can use as little as 2-24kbps
I know it doesnt sound great because I have used it before but it works!
