Search this forum, you'll find several pointers to good anti-spyware software.
As for protecting, keep your system up2date and watch what you click and/or accept.

Hi,
For a very thorough online scanner try this:
http://www.infectedornot.com/worldwide/
There are three free tools here:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
More free applications here:
http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/
Then spybot search & destroy. Remember to run the "immunise"
http://www.safer-networking.org/
Then Spyware Blaster:

If you start searching around, you will find quite a few different security tools. Just make sure you research a tool before downloading it... look at forums and what not... Some of the "removal tools" are not what they seem. Stick with Nihil's suggestions, and throw in a couple of others for the sake of thoroughness. If you think you are infected, boot into safe mode [F5 while booting for Safemode, F8 for boot menu] before running the scans. You are more likely to come out with a clean system that way. Hope this helps... Welcome to AO.

I find www.filehippo.com handy for this sort of operation. Easier to remember than lots of separate URLs

My personal favourites are AdAware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Windows Defender.
