    What ISP is this Internet coming from

    Hi there,

    I know this is a bizarre question, and god knows how it is possible, but I am working on someones pc, and they have no idea who their ISP is. I haven't managed to jog them with the threat that they may be paying about 22 people for internet, they just don't know.

    Is there a way I can find out some how. I tried Tracere command, but don't really know which ip would be which.

    any ideas?

    Run a whois on their IP

    http://whois.dnsstuff.com/tools/whoi...=74.52.164.130

    You can just change the IP at the end of that to the IP that they are being handed from their ISP.

    In traceroute the first IP address will be the ISP.

    They should look at their bank statements to see who they are paying. Tell them to ask their bank for a list of standing orders and direct debits........ that will tell them what they are paying for

    Also, is this ADSL, cable or 56.6 dial-up?

    What sort of modem do they have? Like AOL and BT will have their name on it somewhere.

    Look on the desktop and in the installed programs for associated software such as help files.

    Open Internet Explorer and see what the default and alternative home pages are.

    they may be paying about 22 people for internet, they just don't know
    Quite! that is why they need to "follow the money" it is not uncommon to have more than one if you have a 56.6 as backup. That should be a "pay as you go" "free" service................like you only pay for the connection via your phone bill.

    You haven't told us the OS, but in Win 2000 it would be:

    <start>
    <settings>
    <network and dial-up connections>

    That will tell you what connections have been set up

    I have just done that on this box..................there are six of them!

    If you cannot do someone any good: don't do them any harm....

    Well, what about the gateway? or router? So take that into account when looking at the tracert hops.

    Not relevant, it is a private provider in the UK (they are paying for it). Anyway, if you have a router you would need to know the ISP(s) to get it to connect.

    Also, I know that Jonny is smart enough to figure that when he finds a reserved address it is not an ISP

    Scroll down to the IP Information, and enter the IP address.
