I'm amazed that we got this far in this thread without anyone mentioning how remarkably stupid it was for Microsoft to omit MS config from Win 2000. They really do make you scratch your noggin sometimes.

I must admit I was surprised to learn Win 2k had no msconfig - otherwise it's a good operating system.

So was I when I first found out. In fact I kept searching for it because I just assumed it had to be there somewhere. I couldn't imagine why it would be omitted. Still can't.

The Wolfman just search his whole hard drive.....found a lot of Jpegs, but no MSConfig The Wolfman also checked Add/Remove programs for any Windows compoenents that may include MSConfig....nothing.

It's strange that MS decided not to include it. Maybe they simply forgot? It is in XP and Vista.

I suspect it is just one of those historical quirks?

It was in 98(Gold), 98SE, ME, XP and now Vista. Windows 2000 was an development of NT 4.0 ( it is even called NT 5.0 in some of the documentation) which didn't have it.

If you look in NT 4.0 you will find 4 quickbasic files, but there is no runtime environment for them................gorillas.bas is one The developers borrowed some code from the Win 95 team and didn't realise that they could delete those files. I guess it is down to the development team involved?

The XP version will work in Win 2000

Look hard enough and you may find it. I remember dredging it up
and playing the old gorilla game at work on NT4. Mighta been an upgrade from Win95 though. The runtime was qbasic.exe, and was needed for the
older versions of the text editor edit.com

Surprised nobody mentioned AutoRuns. I've all but stopped using MsConfig since finding that little Sysinternals gem.

what I was disabling on startup (Google toolbar updater,
qttask, Adobe reader). It's tough when you work with

I'm surprised system administrators even allow Adopey Acrobat on any workstations when there are readers out there like Foxit which don't leave components running when you close the program.
