    Free antivirus - McAfee

Not free - ZoneAlarm Security Suite

Don't forget about spyware protection! (If you use LimeWire, you most likely have spyware to go with it)

Free - Spybot Search and Destroy

Not free - Once again, ZoneAlarm Security Suite

Just my opinion, there are many, many more options out there.

    I really like Avast (free)

Of course as Ouroboros said make sure you are running Spybot Search and destroy at least once a week.

Or AVG ... the trouble with online scans is the length of time they take. Also they don't protect you realtime.

I agree with Moira. AVGFree is a great antivirus. It also has free updates, which are very important. No matter what AV you choose, make sure to keep it updated, as there are new viruses, worms, trojans etc coming out all the time. Also like Ouroboros said, get some antispyware apps. The one he mentioned, Spybot S&D is a great program. I use that along with Adaware. As many members in many threads have pointed out, it is best to use a combination of scans to pick up any stragglers...

here are the links to the programs I have mentioned:

    AVG Free - http://free.grisoft.com/doc/download.../frt/0?prd=aff
    Adaware - http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-200...bj=dl&tag=top5
    Spybot - http://www.download.com/Spybot-Searc...html?tag=lst-1

    Hope this helps

I use Zone Alarm (free) as firewall and AVG (free, too) as anti-virus. For cookie-embedded spywares and data miners, I have AVG Anti-Spyware, Spybot S&D and AdAware SE (all free versions).

ZA automatically updates itself whenever I go online. AVG updates on daily schedule when online, otherwise, I do manual updating whenever I go online.

For the AVGAS, SpybotSD and AdAwareSE, I update them at least once a week. But my first line of defense before I even bother using the trio is launching CCleaner immediately after going offline (after which I run AusLogic's defrag for HDD).

Virus scanning is a weekly routine. Once a month, I check on the Program Controls of Zone Alarm to purge those that my 6-year old son may have authorized whenever he attempts to play online.

The primary source of virus, trojan infection--(to include VB scripts), in my view--nowadays is the reckless use of flash disks on by imprudent users shabbily-maintained computer systems and the subsequent insertion of these USB carriers into a clean system without bothering to pre-scan the flash disks before exchanging files back and forth. Of secondary nature is the indiscriminate access of websites without bothering to conduct a pre-scan for potential threats (I used to have XPLab's LinkScanner but I had to uninstall as it slowed my already slow dial-up connection).

IMO, the bottom line here is that: even when armed with all of the available programs that can be had, either as freeware, shareware, trialware or by subscription, the user's degree of awareness and level of precaution exercised with constancy and consistency will always take precedence to minimize (if not obviate) possible computing security compromise.

... just a though regarding the subject.

OK............ all good information; BUT (in addition):

Why not hit it at source?

A lot of scumware needs to alter the Windows Registry.............

Look around their site for other freeware as well

It was free for me with AOL as an ISP .... I like Avast too. I use it on this computer because despite saying it would work with Vista, I never did have much luck with AVG here.
