well, I think O&O format recovery should also be good one.

And BTW, I have heard a lot about recovering using Linux. what tools/commands can be used so that if i get into problems, I would be able to do something using Linux (as well).

    Hi jockey~

    Please go here:

    http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

Ultimate Boot CD and lots of other tools. Also follow the link to the Windows version. It is generally preferable to repair Windows from within Windows if at all possible

    All free stuff of course

    Hi there KK,

Please try the PC Inspector tool first. It does understand FAT as well as NTFS. Formatting should not have lost much data if any.

As a weapon of last resort there is: roadkil's "unstoppable copier":

    http://www.roadkil.net/unstopcp.html

This will take some time, and you will need a target partition of at least the same size as the one you are trying to recover.

It does not care what the format is as it works at the individual file level and rebuilds them even if the drive is physically damaged.

Windows and Linux versions are available.

Remember, that method of recovery will take some time, depending on the level of fragmentation. Now, as you said the files were mostly utilities and entertainment, I would expect that you have kept them pretty much defragmented for performance? so it should not be too bad.

    All the software is free

    Hi KK,

    Which software have you used?

If it was the "unstoppable copier" then that is all you are going to get, in my experience.

All I can suggest is that your brother must have tried to do some recovery himself? That could well have destroyed things?

Has he sold his immortal soul to the RIAA?
