hey I have a weird problem. Any ideas on how to fix it ?

okay here is the problem. the compuer is a xp pro with all of the updates , windows firewall is off, and my av/firewall is Avast. Now I can browse the internet just fine, but if any of my programs like Steam, WoW try to connect they sy that they cannot connect. heck avast cannot even connect to get updates. but other computers on my network have no problems at all so its not a router of isp problem. any ideas ?
    thanks in advance.

    Well,

First thing to check are your firewall settings.

What messages do these applications give exactly?

Take a look in your system logs to see if there are any clues there.

Also look at your firewall log.

The Wolfman agrees with Nahil. The Wolfman isn't familiar with Avast, but it sounds like Avast is controlling which software can access the Internet. Perhaps Internet Explorer or Mozilla have been allowed access. Maybe WoW or Steam are denied access? Check your Firewall settings.

Something else to look at is your NAT settings in your Router. If your using Linksys, it's under the Applications and Gaming tab. If someone else has WoW installed in your house, maybe port forwarding is setup to redirect WoW traffic to their internal PC instead of yours. I'm pretty sure this would deny access to both WoW and Steam.

Can *any* applications access the internet other then your browser? What about MSN messenger? What about other games?

well there is nothing in the system or the firewall logs that i could find. I have also tried uninstalling it to see if that would work but to no avail. the messages say that they cannot connect to the network. tha i need to check my internet settings.

    my av/firewall is Avast
As far as I know, Avast doesn't make firewalls. Any chance you're using another firewall?

    Zelfaldor,

This may be a long shot, but ping your router's ip address, then try pinging yahoo.com

Perhaps you are seeing a cached copied of some internet pages your browser earlier? Maybe your PC doesn't have Internet Access?

A good point Neg, the free version certainly doesn't have a firewall.

When I encounter weird internet connectivity issues I generally run LSPFIX from the cexx organisation. It could be some sort of Winsock2 stack corruption.

Please read the instructions very carefully
