Does AO have an IRC server/chatroom still
Hi there
Was going through all the AO newsletters and in the very first one there is detail on how to join AO's IRC chatroom.
Just want to know if there is an IRc server / chatroom still availble or has it died

Greetings.
Back in the day when JP used to own the site, there was an official AO irc channel. {Fun Fun times those where.}
Anyhow there's an un-official irc channel that a lot of AO'ers seem to end up at.

unfortunatly jupitermedia didn't want the responsibility of running an AO irc channel due to the nature of the forum, and the type's of people that would ultimatly use the channel. They didn't want to get into trouble or something lol.
So once they aquired the AO domain and content etc they pulled the channel down. amongst other things....

There are problems with an "official" channel, not the least of which is moderating it.
Whilst it was OK when we had a private site, now that we are Corporate there are a number of additional legal and commercial considerations to be taken into account. Having minors as members immediately springs to mind.
Anyway, I seriously question the need for it. Since it was closed there have been a number of attempts to set up unofficial versions and these have all died due to lack of interest.

I remember back when the channel was online there were many flame wars between serious AOers and sk1dd1es.
The main reason I never went on it.
The browser enabled client was cool though.

What nih said. We have liability concerns the individual site owner wouldn't necessarily have, and it's just not possible to moderate something like that all the time. We don't have the manpower to do it.
