If it's a simple character substitution, you've got some clues from the English language: A, E, O, T, N, and I are the most common letters in English. The first four account for nearly 40% (!) of all letters in standard text; add the N and the I, and you're up to 50%. So, finding the most common symbols would be a good start. My next step would be to replace all symbols with actual letters - that way, you can use a tool (such as Decrypto) to run through possibilities.
