Nearly identical IP addresses

I received a threatening email from an IP that was nearly identical to one from an acquaintance. How likely is it that this threatening message originated from him or from his computer?

The IP is 69.147.65.172 (threat) his inncouous emails come from 69.147.65.152 ... HELP? I am seeking some proof to confront him.

That IP address resolves to Yahoo! (possibly New York) and I don't have to tell you just how many web-mail accounts they have?

If you don't believe me, set up a Yahoo! account and send another account an e-mail once an hour for say 5 hours............ I would expect that you will get similar but slightly different IPs for each of them.

If you are being threatened then please report the matter to your local law enforcement agencies.

If they consider the matter to be too trivial then report the matter to Yahoo!

Yes, these things can be traced, but not by the likes of us.

There is also the possibility of the offensive item being sent from a compromised machine or e-mail account........... still worth reporting if only to warn the potentially innocent party?

Either way if the ips are that close to each other they are just given out by the same ISP dont look too much into it.
