    Checking BW of a program

    Hi to all

Panda AV is releasing their 2009 product line which scans from what is known as a "cloud" which has an enormous amount of virus signatures.

The purpose of this is that the client doesnt have to keep it resident on the clients machine.

Excellent idea - however one problem.

IN south africa our BW isnt too great as most of you know.

What I want to do is isntall a beta copy which I have and run it overnight + run a few scans to see how much BW comsumption it takes with the scan and referencing files to the cloud.

How do I do this? DU meter and kill all other apps ?

    XP and vista available.

    Let me know.

    Thanks.

Besides du meter, you could also try with cyber bandwidth monitor, it suppose to gives you reports about down/up-load speeds: http://www.speedapps.com/cybermonitor.htm

If you have a firewall, instead of killing apps, you could block all the traffic for the apps except the one you want to meassure

Yes I could deny traffic for those in my firewall settings - good idea.

Is there a way to limited it to one computer?

Teh reason being I have two PC's at home. I can do this on my secondary PC without interfering with my main PC so I can carry on doing whatever I please on there.

Am I right or will this affect the main PC?

Someone suggested netlimiter - ultimately I would like to check the BW while actively using BW with other Apps.

I would like to "isolate" it.

You could simply use your adapter's Connection Status to get a rough idea... (see attachment)

Even if it's a router with integrated firewall or anyother hardware firewall protecting the whole lan, (I assume) you can configure it to block traffic just from one of the PCs in which case, as you said, it won't be a problem for your main computer.

netlimiter won't be useful for you, at least IMHO, netlimiter is about defining quotas of BW for one or more PCs and in your case isn't something that you're interested in.

About connection status, every computer will display their own traffic so it could be a good idea as long as you can block or deny every traffic except the program you want, just disable the connection on the secondary PC and restart it to have an accurate meassure (to start from 0 d/u Kbps)

Ok cool - I will run D/U meter and use the statistics on adapter as negative suggested.

    Thanks for all you help.
