Hmmm, did you update your graphics drivers before this started to happen?

Another possibility is defective RAM, try running a diagnostic tool.

    Hey Nihil

The new cataclyst driver 8.7 i was trying to install about 3 or four days ago.

However to my knowledge this was happening before I did the install.

Defective RAM - hmm please dont tell me that.

What sort of tool for ram can I run?

Just one point you want to know, one windows update was failing.

I posted this in another post. I will look for it and post it here.

So I turned off automatic updates via group policy on the local machine.

Dont know if this is a problem.

    OK.

Use this to check the status of your Windows updates:

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

And this to test your memory:

    http://www.memtest86.com/

Make sure that you uninstall any remains of the failed patch.

If you still have a problem, try rolling back the video drivers to a previous version.

    Hey Nihil

I have isntalled Belarc when you mentioned it before.

I jsut need to read the FAQ though.

I remember you giving instructions on how to go about using it however i got to a wall , flopped over and died :P

    Hi Cider,

For this exercise just scroll down and look for little red X symbols next to the Microsoft patches.

I know MS have a history function, but I have seen that report patches as good when Belarc said they weren't, and an uninstall/reinstall fixed the problem Just look on it as a second opinion.

The 0xc0000005 always points to an Access Violation. Could be bad memory, checking that is easy..

The other big issue may be DEP. Not sure where it is on Vista as I don't have one available.
For XP is in the system properties, tab advanced. Performance -> Settings.
Tab Advanced.. Make sure it's set to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only".

Also make double sure you don't have any malware lingering about as these are known to generate Access Violations too...

    Hey there

I will test the memory and check for DEP.

I doubt I have malware though. However I will check it out.

    Thanks for the tips.
