    Security Suite Performance Testing

"With everything in place I ran the main set of real world tests over and over and averaged the results. I ran the boot-time test over fifty times and again averaged the results. Now I'm prepared to run the same tests after installing each security suite and compare the results. It's going to be a little rough to start - I won't know exactly how to interpret the results until I have a few data points from different suites. And I plan to add a few more tests specifically targeting CPU and resource consumption. Going forward I'll be able to say "Suite X slows browsing by half" or "Suite Y adds two minutes to boot time". That will be fantastic information for those trying to make a choice."

    Hey, brokencrow,

Are you psychic................ or is it just deja vu?

My wife did this online purchase, and got ZoneAlarm Security Suite as a "thankyou"............ yeah, the retail sector is hurting over here, so they are reverting to their usual last resort of bribery and corruption

So, she now has a P4 1.7Ghz that runs slower than a 286 on Nitrazepam BP Hell!, I have an HP Vectra V12 that runs faster.......... I am talking 15 seconds to bring up a post on AO here...............

OK, I know that there is some sort of conflict, and I am in the process of finding out what it is.

This article is a great find IMO, as all you hear is that suite X or Y or Z is a sluggard, but it is all anecdotal? I have bookmarked this one, and will keep it on the radar.

Incidentally, that looks like an interesting site to explore, particularly the free download stuff? I am particularly interested in the HDD tester

    Very good indeed.

However wont other variables affect the tests?

Anyhow - if someone like myself would like to test this, how do I do so.

    EDIT:

Nice HDD tools and network tools

    Nice link.

...if I was psychic, I'd know your wife's passwords, Nihil.

    It must be deja-vu.

Seriously, it'd be nice to have some metric on all these AV apps. We KNOW
some of them are dogs. Now we may be able to confirm it. As for any variables,
as long as the app load was the same, hardware would be about it.

Definitely one to keep an eye on...
