Connecting a Desktop with a Laptop for playing multiplayer games
Hi Guys,
Does someone knows how can I create a network for the purpose of playing multiplayer games with my desktop and laptop without using a router.
The issue is that I really don't wanna buy a router. All I've got to connect is a ADSL 2+ modem, RJ-45 jack (both ends) cords and USB (Both ends) cords. The desktop has got the LAN Card in it.
The desktop runs Windows XP SP2 and the laptop runs Windows Home Premium SP1.
Pls. feel free to ask any querries.
Cheers

If your modem has enough connections (i.e. 4 RJ45 ports) stick them in there.
If your modem doesn't have that get a crosscable and connect both machines directly to each other on their network interface.
Btw, you don't need a router, you need a switch. A simple, cheap, 4 port 100Mbit/s switch will do nicely.

Well for two computers a crossover will do nicely however as SD said I would recommend a 4 port mini switch. Cheapy.

It's been quite a while since I've seen just a 4 port switch for sale in consumer electronics stores. I'd imagine that the cost for the switch would be inline to that of a home router.
As the posts above state, the easiest/cheapest way would be to connect them through a crossover cable. If you have the tools, you can make one. Otherwise, I'd just ask someone you know who is into networking. For some reason they normally cost more in an electronics store than a patch cable. In my opinion, all those stores rip you off when it comes to ethernet cables.
If you do know anyone in computers/networking... ask around for either a switch and some patch cables or a crossover cable. If they're anything like me they probably have boxes of extra networking gear that they could spare.

They have this gadget that plugs into a nic makes a regular patch cable a crossover....I just thought that was cool...and would be handy to have for the tool box instead of carrying extra cables

Thanks guys !!!
I got the job done.. I had two outputs from the ADSL 2+ modem, namely one for RJ45 and other for USB. I connected both to either computers and made the host - the Vista run laptop and the XP desktop to be the client.
Just started the network wizard in Vista and got the job done.
