    I think you have to be a masochist to run Vista on anything
    less than 2 gb's ram and a dual core proc.
    Yeah, but that's been defacto for the past four or more years now.

    And that was with NO security apps, like AV.
    Back when this site had alot of children pretending to be "IRC private Investigators" and "internet tough-guys"... I would have probably laughed at a comment like that.

    I believe linux distro cd's should install Virtualbox from Sun as a default desktop icon. then have scripts to seek out ntfs or Fat partitions for a zero config install. Put a fake office icon on the desktop. Give average joe a Linux machine but he/she emulates Office Xp. Nobody gets hurts since you had the original license in the first place. As a bonus, you get a builtin firewall or bridge that spyware can't feed off of.

    I'm running Windows 7 prebeta right now, and I can vouch that it runs like a dream on 1gb ram, integrated intel, and core 2 duo.

    It has convinced me to switch back to Windows after ditching XP for linux.

    Of course I still love linux, but Windows 7 has me drooling.

    I'm gonna upgrade to 2gb ram sometime

    You guys are gonna love Win7...

    It uses roughly 500mb running at startup and idle on my machine with aero enabled

    I'm impressed with the firewall included--it is very comprehensive compared to that piece of crap on XP

    It is surprisingly stable for a prebeta

    compatible means it will still run spyware and crapware. In microsoft land, one just needs to hackup their flagship C# dll to create hooks. Watch they reintroduce bugs and fixes that were elimated in the late 90's. API has to eumlate all the Vista hype and function calls....got the please the folks with Vista copys already.

    Fix Vista? Ummm, did MS ever "fix" any of their other OS's? It's
    all relative.
    Yes, they did IMHO. Try Windows 98SE, that was really what Win95/98Gold should have been?....................... and I am a fanboy of Windows 2000, given that I quite liked Windows NT 4.0 SP6a

    // off topic wind-up

    It is surprisingly stable for a prebeta
    There is no such thing as a "pre-beta" old chap.............. it is an "alpha"...... please trust me, as I studied ancient Greek at high school

    //back again

    @brokencrow

    I ran Vista on a 128 mb video card, a gig of ram, and a 2.4 ghz
    P4 (pre-HT) and it was a dog.
    You might remember my test of a while back where I built two machines with 5+ year old components?..............

    The key factor seemed to be to get a 256Mb video card?

    I believe it. I was running a TI-4200 dual display card.

    Does Windows 7 have that WFS and WSH? Those were in my opinion the most interesting things Vista had to offer and both got dropped. I know WSH is at least out but I haven't touched it.

    After one day...

    BSOD

    Unbootable right now (thank god for linux)

    I'll have to reinstall later

    I dont think Windows 7 has WSH...I haven't had a chance to look

    I'll just run it in VirtualBox next time

    It is smooth sailing though on my computer--absolutely no slow down.

    I'll have screens when I get around

    will nag users much less than its much-maligned predecessor, Vista.
    That's interesting. I wonder if that implies fewer user account restrictions, which would inherently be less secure. Possible step backwards in terms of security for the sake of keeping the masses happy?

    wow windows is just dishin out a whole new os instead of fixing the one out now.

    Vista is like, totally, like, the new Windows ME!
