    testing gps for wardriving...

I got a usb gps device ( GT-3series ) that I want for wardriving, but I can't quite make it work, on either wifihopper or netstumbler, it is suppose to show under com3 in device manager, but is not showing there, but when plug into wifihopper the application is able to connect to the gps on port com3, but is not reading any coordinates...this is a cheap 15$ gps receiver, so I wouldn't be surprised if it didn't work... any advise on how to get this working appreciated

    thanks

Use some serial communication program like miniterm to connect to the com port. It should spew out a constant stream of coordinates in plain ascii. Also make sure you've set the correct baud rate. It's easy to change this on the fly in miniterm.

If it's a cheap one and you are getting serial data but no coordinates move closer to a window or test outside. Most of the cheap ones hardly work when inside.

To add to what SD has said:

Firstly I would check that the device is working properly as a regular GPS device. At $15 I can't imagine that quality control is very rigorous.

Secondly check out what communications it supports (NMEA?) and if you need any drivers and converters/dongles.

yeah, like some here said, don't expect good things from a 15$ gps.. so I decided to get this USGLOBALSAT USG-BU353 on amazon, it has good reviews so will see

    thanks
