openmss - replace hard drive
Trying to replace hard drive in maxtor mss shared drive (nas device).
I have exhausted the openmss.org forum as well as google search results.
Still getting 10054 when trying to reload firmware.
Apparently, the error 10054 means the disk cannot be read. I have formatted, nuked, hex zero'd as well as tried several different partition types/formats without success.
Here's a summary of what I have tried:
1. test new drive to ensure it is functioning properly.
2. boot/nuke the drive. install drive in mss.
3. reset the MSS.
4. copy the original firmware from the maxtor CD (also tried various openmss flavors).
5. ping mss. OK.
6. run nasload from command prompt. get 10054 error.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How are you testing the drive?
I've used some formatting utilities that managed to screw up the MBR in the past. You could try using some Maxtor proprietary troubleshooting software. Run everything they've got and give it a shot again and see what happens.
In the past this worked for me, but I was using Seagate utilities.

I tested the drive by formatting it and then ensuring I could write/read to/from it. Then I boot/nuked it and used a hexedit to see the hex zeros in the MBR (according to openmss forum, the MBR needs to be hex zeros.). What maxtor tools are you referring to? FYI Seagate bought them. I couldnt find any tools. I emailed their tech support and they told me they dont support this issue.

Heeeey....good to know. I managed to miss that one.
I used Seatools (diagnostic utility). They also have utilities called DiscWizard and MaxBlast but I do not know what they do.
I used MiniPE at the time, which is an illegal boot disc that already has many of these utilities installed.

I tried to install a working disk drive from a working mss device. no dice.
I have a feeling the mss device (broadcom) itself is damaged.
k, thanks for trying to help. i guess this one goes out with the trash.
