    using SIM with laptops

    hi...
    does anyone know of any hardware device that lets you connect your sim card to your computer so the computer can function as a phone? i'm not sure if a 3G modem can do it...i want to be able to make calls and send texts from my laptop not just browse and i'm thinking if there's a small device maybe expresscard or SD that'd be extremely useful...thanks

    I use my Nokia N95 for that. Connection on the laptop via Bluetooth, on the laptop it's basically an old fashioned dialup connection to a special number (*99#). The phone makes the UMTS (3G) connection.

    Works like a charm but you do need a dataplan of course.

    Not by itself no, but there are apps readily available for different types of phones that will enable you to send txt messages and make phone calls.

    I didn't think it did on it's own.....I used to tether my old Nextel, would love to be able to slide a SIM in a USB SIM reader, jack in, and go to town.....
