    DARPA slacks

    http://www.dtic.mil/descriptivesum/Y...A/0305103E.pdf

This is, admittedly, not a very comprehensive document but as I look at it I can't help but see that it seems that until this year no money from the federal defense budget has been allocated to cyber security. Im not sure what that means, is that for security from international threats, to monitor domestically, both, or something else. If this is so, I find it incredible to the point of unbelievable. Maybe I have arrived at the wrong conclusions.

I am certain that you have............or at least, I sincerely hope so. I am basing that on the fact that we are looking at a .mil site rather than a .gov one.

I think that is specifically aimed at military expenditure, rather than the much broader ambit of national security.

Something along the lines of the French Navy Air Force being grounded for two days as they were a few months ago?

Of course governments can move budgeting around through different departments. So here today, somewhere else tomorrow. Just like here in the US, The One is wanting to move cybersecurity from DHS (Dept of Homeland Security), directly under the White House. So the budget figures will be zero for DHS if that occurs.

Sure, but it looks like 50million followed by 10 million?............... you don't get much for that, so I would suspect they have something pretty specific in mind?

Of course they won't specify it in the budget

    mm hm

Yeah, Nihil I hope I have too, my surprise stemmed from that I was always under the impression that the internet as we know it was a military/defense conception and then seems neglected for a number of years.

Unless of course Dan Brown (of DaVinci code fame) had obscure information and it was really a euro invention, then its almost (but not really) understandable

Well, I believe that it started with ARPANET

The European connection you are thinking of was Tim Berners-Lee, but most of his work was at MIT.

This must be some sort of specialist security for specific military requirements I would have thought?

I believe while home users were on 1200-baud modems and corps used token-ring networks, universitys and government wanted to test the next generation network using super-expensive T-1 transports. To destroy the bbs community, gopher\telnet\lynx were given to students in that era so they will become the elders and inventors of the tools we take for granted today. The government and schools enjoyed multi-user, multi-tasking Unix which is perfect for the job while home users were stuck on Commodore 64\apple 2e using...."Basic". I didn't know what c\c++ was until a university gopher program crashed and dropped into a unix shell. While later I realized was on Arpanet. Then I learned about other packet networks such as tymnet and sprintnet. Then the movie "War Games" came out. I always thought that was an intro to security.

IPv6 has been around for a while but not used because of enhanced-security. If it became mainstream, it would be difficult to monitor connections and such.
