I'm trying to figure out why this is in the forensics forum?

You might try the installer clean up tool?
http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;290301
sfc /scannow might also help if you have a corrupted file(s)

What's the e-x-a-c-t error meesage? Exactly. Visual C++ errors are typically runtime errors. Did you google anything on Visual C++ before just blindly started hacking away?
Check the filesystem and HDD. I just fixed a Gateway laptop yesterday running Vista 64-bit. This client had been getting 'unknown' errors for some time, figured he was hacked or something, then brought me the unit when it was reduced to doing rolling reboots and Vista would only boot to recovery mode, but still fail.
What apparently happened to this guy's unit was the partition was corrupted and one or more of the required 'dll's was unavailable. In hindsight, I could've fixed a wee bit sooner running "chkdsk /r c:" from the shell (command prompt). I ran SpinRite first and that fixed it, but chkdsk would've done this job.
Try running chkdsk if you are still able to boot into Vista. It'll have you reboot.

Personally I think that a program not designed for the 64 bit windows was installed ...overwrote some dlls ...and voila you have the error.
Try a repair

Touché. I like my hammers, but everything ends up lookin' like a nail.
Is Vista a pain in the neck to repair, or am I just getting old?

It's a new ballgame, that's for sure. Onwards and upwards? We'll see.
It'll probably be OK once I get more used to it. I've been running Vista
on one laptop, a tri-boot unit. It's not my favorite OS but I've got my
teeth in it. I wish the VLK's were as loose as XP's. I used to bang up
a few test units just to see what I could do and not worry about the
licensing. Now, ugh, I feel lucky I got it on one unit.
