AntiVirus Antivirus?

Hi AO's

when ever security name comes i trust only 1 name www.antionline.com and the trust members of it

i got stuck into choosing the best antivirus, internet security, worm cleanup.


i was using kaspersky internet security 2009 since last 2 months and i was pleased with it recently i and my friends got in discussion with
antiviruses and i got some bad reports of KIS-2009 and good reports of Quick Heal and McAFee. where as i have a bad expreince with Quick Heal and McAFee as some time before -
i typed a word document at my friend place and later i bought it back to my house PC and as i connected the flash drive to it McAFee deleted that file without even asking and than i came to know Quick Heal also does the same

ofcoz i know there may be a threat in the file but it should try to disinfect or heal it. but question of negotiatoin.


now i am on a quest which antivirus should i trust.

my subcribtion to antivirus is getting over in a month and i need to buy a new one

and i cannt think of anything better guyz you poeple are the best in security and i trust you people.

I would say stick to Kaspersky .. It doesn't have the best firewall out there (i haven't used it, but from what i've seen on other machines) But it does have good detection rate and cleanup..

I've been using Avast for the last few months, it seems to pickup everything i throw it's way.

and firewall wise i have used PCtools firewall

i have used avast for years, recommended it to friends and never had a problem. well worth its cost.....FREE
how they do that i have no idea but it is good
(have also used avg but felt it missed some bugs...but that is just how i feel)

We had some tests run at places such as AV-TEST.org and our detection ratio smoked kaspersky by 1 or 2 %.

Check the advanced settings. Most AVs will delete stuff in their "as installed" state. You should be able to change the "action taken" to "ask" or "quarantine"

2. "Cleaning" has the obvious implication that it let you get infected in the first place?

Basically you need something that is behaviorally orientated rather than pattern file matching.

But we don't like UAC do we?..............so we turn it off don't we?

There are virtual sandbox applications that will help protect you whilst on the internet; SandboxIE or Fortres Grand, for example.

Another approach is to use something like Deep Freeze (there is a free one but I can't remember the name) which reinstates your system on every reboot. Obviously, you need to start with a clean system

These days you are most likely to be hit by some sort of remote access malware, and the only sure cure for that is format and reinstall. That is why I don't consider detection and repair to be that relevant..............prevention is the key IMO

I generally take reviews with a pinch of salt, as they all come up with different answers, but this one does have a nice table of features. You need to have scripts enabled for the site, and there is a link in the top left to all 18 products reviewed.

Please note: The versions reviewed may not be the latest, for example Panda is now at 2010.

One of the major problems with AV and security suites is that whilst they can be quite effective at stopping malware they are not very good at detecting exploits (reports suggest 30% or less ). This is not surprising, as exploits involve legitimate software.

The answer is to make sure that everything is up to date (patched), and I have been using Secunia's PSI (Personal Software Inspector) for this purpose. It is free for non-commercial use.

Basically there isn't much use in having sophisticated defence systems if your underlying platform is vulnerable.

and it seems to be really a better explaination on it as off both the website give Kaspersky a better rating and previously i asked the question about McAfee and Quick Heal are not even compared to kaspersky.

Well i was more confused when i visited a vendor and i found that Kaspersky Internet security 2009 was around 20$ for 3 users and McAfee and Quick Heal where 32$ for Single User it actually kept me in a confusion 1 years subscribtion

well although now i feel to stick to kaspersky and is there any other software to be used with kaspersky to strengthen my firewall or some thing.

Hi KK,

Certainly get RegistryProt and WinPatrol. They will warn you of attempted changes to the Registry and new start-up programs. They don't conflict with any AV I have used and don't take up much resource, as they are not actually running all the time.

I also use Spybot Search & Destroy with the interactive "TeaTimer" turned on. Once you have installed it, change the settings to "advanced" mode and activate the interactive protection and "immunisation".

I would certainly recommend Secunia PSI which I linked earlier, to keep your applications up to date, it also checks your Windows update status.

Mostly it is a housekeeping tool, but it will clean areas where malware might be hiding. I generally run it after every session with the wiping set to a single pass of pseudorandom characters. No malware launcher will be able to get round that!

Please use this with caution as it is really just to suggest what you should look at (Google). Also, you may find things that are flagged because they have a different access path..............just check that you don't have the same thing in two places, as one will most probably be malware.
