    Ubuntu 32bit VS 64bit

    Hi all,

I currently use Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit on my laptop. It is the first version that has allowed me to use my wireless internet dongle, so I finally got rid of Windows. YAY! My laptop has 2 gb of RAM, and a basic intel video chip, so the Ubuntu runs okay, but slightly slow.

At the end of the year, I want to get a reasonably beefy desktop pc, and am considering Ubuntu 64 bit. What are peoples experiences with it? Any other thoughts/ideas would be appreciated. Thankyou

When you beef up your system give Debian 64 a try.. you'll feel worth it!

BTW whether your system is 32 or 64-bit it doesn't actually matter at all, unless your doing any specific operations!

    Cool

I will consider Debian. Thanks for the response.

Also when I get the beefy desktop, I want to play Games.

If I run Windows 7 under VirtualBox, provided I give the virtual machine suitable
resource allocation, will games run as well as a 'normal' Windows installation?

    Thanks

Unless your new machine has more then 4GB of memory stick to 32 bit.

Contrary to popular belief a 64 bit OS is only marginally faster then 32 bit. The only benefit is being able to address more then 4GB of memory without resorting to things like PAE.
