Find IP of friend using MSN Messenger

I saw another thread about the same thing but Yahoo Messenger, So i might aswell post a little trick for MSN Messenger doing the same thing

    1. Start Wireshark/SmartSniff or any other packet sniffer of your choice
    2. Change your display picture to a large one
    3. Open the contacts window and write something to him/her/it
    4. Check your sniffer

I did that and only found the IP of the MSN Server. What header fields are you looking at? Are you encapsulating your packets in any way?

according to my packet dump, the xfer of the avatar (as well as general file transfers) go through the msn server. No peer-to-peer with my version (adium on one end, miranda on the other).

    This is what i did:

    (Using MSN Messenger 8.5)

    I fired up Smartsniff
Changed display picture, opened a conversation with a guy and wrote something
A connection was established to his ip on port 54082 and i recieved this:
    00000000 04 00 00 00 66 6F 6F 00 30 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 ....foo. 0.......
    00000010 A4 33 E9 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 .3...... ........
    00000020 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 01 00 00 5E F2 D3 5E ........ ....^..^
    00000030 22 55 73 47 83 D3 68 0B A6 81 01 F9 "UsG..h. ....
And then my picture was sent.

Every time the teeny boppers make a thread like this I always wonder why they go about the hard way of such a meaningless and stupid task.

he's right.. i've noticed that multiple times in Windows Live Messenger at least.. my firewall starts asking for permission for my friends IP (usually ISP gateway) to access my machine..

Oldest trick i remember in IM's was - file transfer.. early version's of all IM's would create a P2P connection when transferring a file.. now it's through thier server though..

It was a great way to start off things..

A quick link sent via IM or email would accomplish this with very little effort. In my experience, most everyone will click a random link out of sheer bordom if nothing else...

Or as Cross mentioned, just set up script on a free webhost that allows .php and just get 'em to click the link visit the site, and have the site log there IP and what ever info you are interested in like browser etc.
