C++ source code: labyrinth game
Hello there ...
I haven't logged in since, er let's see, January 27th 2006 02:05 pm. Hope you guys are doing great.
I'll first introduce myself quickly, then we'll get to the reason of this post.
Well, I'm 24 today and I'm from the era when HACKERS.COM was still up and running. Whatever the hell ever happened to that website but for those who don't know, hackers.com was a dream-come-true to newbies. Anyone knows anything about it's sudden disapperance?
Programming was one of my favourite hobbies and in, I think, 2004, I came up with this game written entirely with Borland C++, that I called 'Labyrinth'.
You can download it here : http://www.box.net/shared/brkc67hlbi
... And the source code here : http://www.box.net/shared/qa5ja35oju
This is the very fist time I'm putting the source code online and anyone can freely play with it, re-upload it etc. No problem.
At the time of writing i had a 200 MHz CPU Pentium II and I had, my god, a bad time trying to figure out how to introduce a 'delay' in a program in order to make different 'creatures' in the game move simultaneously. Didn't find out how and I still don't know how to do this. I couldn't care less because I'm no longer in the programming stuff (I'm doing medical studies...).
But if anyone knows how to do this please feel free to modify the code and compile it again.
As a consequence, I had to introduce a kind of 'artificial delay' whereby I used a counter to increment to a certain large number. This took processor time and adequately introduced a delay on my Pentium II. So if you run the program on a today's computer, the 'creatures' move FAST because of increase in processing speed ...
Anyway, enjoy, and let me know what you think.

Now, excuse me if you please ... this has nothing whatsoever to do with programming. Here's a friend of mine who creates absolutely fantastic music. I'm just doing my part in trying to promote him. Believe me, you'll keep the music playing all night long ... ENJOY

And if you want the whole package on HD, here it is. It's awesome.

Thanks guys !

Hi,
This is the Wayback Machine's entry for hackers.com:
http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.hackers.com
Around 2004 they changed their name to ITfreaks.com, and subsequently seem to have disappeared.

Yeah right.
Just download this code and run it on your machine...
It's a really cool maze game!
Sorry to be cynical.

Well, I guess that I am cynical as well, although in a different way.
The vast majority of malware these days is written to make money, not out of malice. You write the stuff to either use or sell, not to post for free on a security website
Anyway, I submitted it to this online scanning site:
http://www.virustotal.com/
42/42 Antivirus and malware products found nothing wrong with it. I also ran Malwarebytes and Spybot S&D for good measure. I will give it a try on a PI/133/192Mb and a PII/266/128Mb (Win98SE & Win 2000 SP4, respectively)............it doesn't sit too well on a Pentium Core Duo.......... the little beasties behave as if they are on steroids!
Cheers.

Oh no...
Oh no ...
Okay guys, let me explain. I think you need some explanation.
I wrote this piece of code as a teenager just for FUN. I wanted to create a Maze game without using any elaborate graphics mode (just plain DOS textmode) and see to what level I could take it just by writing in very simple beginner's C++.
I came across AntiOnline during the days it was called AntiCode. And because I have never ever contributed anything so far to the online community, and that at the same time I found this game and source code on a CD that I burned a long time ago that somewhat got lost, I thought, oh well, let me post this online so that it can be of some kind of help to newbies interested in C++ programming. That's all.
There's no malicious code whatsoever in it. I have no interest at all in programming at the moment as I am at the end of my medical studies in France. That's it, tada.
Better to run it in full-screen mode. Yes, this is not possible under Windows Vista.
Yes, the beasts run wild on the new PCs, this is what I was pointing out I couldn't find a solution for at the time of writing. Basically, I wrote this alone and have never had any kind of computer studies at school whatsoever on C++.
Phew, anymore explanation ?

Hey by the way, there is a cheat in it. By pressing the '|' button once you become invincible. Press it again to cancel.
This is not the letter 'l' of the alphabet but the C++ OR operator : ||
Got it?
So how is it on pentium II ?

Solution found
Hi,
Recently I came across a DOS emulator freeware on the net. The best of them actually : DosBox. Download the latest version 0.73 from http://www.dosbox.com/
And yes, the game works perfectly with this ...

You wouldn't happen to be Ken Silverman, would you? The guy who wrote Ken's labyrinth in the early ninties?
