I was always taught to design systems to be as idiot proof as possible, because the further an error gets into a system the more difficult and costly it is to correct it.
The most memorable quote I remember about "idiot proof" was
something from the early days of the automobile, in reference
to the methods of changing gears. Something along the lines
of "It is impossible to design a foolproof gear change mechanism
because fools are so ingenius" They will find a way...
I came in to the world with nothing. I still have most of it.

    Hey! I remember that quote

I did not express myself very well I am afraid. What I was talking about was more like "input screening".............err, if that field should have 15 numeric characters, a postcode (zipcode) has this format, and so on, either deny it, or at least force a double enter?

Now, they could obviously enter the wrong data, but not garbage data?

Kinda reminds me of that US cartoon strip where the computer developer is talking to his boss, and the boss asked "shall we ever meet the client?", to which he answered "no".................so his boss said "make them reboot on every typo"

You will know the strip........the guy's tie stood up of it's own accord Was it "Wilbur" or something like that?

    Hmmmm,

Tell you what mate, I once worked for this female IT director.............. conversation went something like:

"I can't say that it works on my machine can I?"

Her response was: :"No, but it's fun isn't it Johnno"

I still had to fix the problem

I think everyone has tried that 1 at least once in there IT careers. A case of "If i ignore the issue it will eventually diss-appear".

Oh how ive done this more than once ...
The world is a dangerous place to live; not because of the people who are evil, but because of the people who don't do anything about it.
