Sometimes there is a function key that will enable/disable the touchpad. [usually you have to press fn+'whatever key'] On some systems, it can also be controled in BIOS.
One other thing you could try is booting off of a live Linux CD, to see if it will work in a different OS.

This is a very small distro:

Just download the ISO, and then write that image to a CD. If you have trouble with that one, you could always use Ubuntu [ubuntu.com] or knoppix [knoppix.net].

Check the bios and reset to default settings. Save settings and exit.

^^ I second brokencrow's suggestion. Could be a BIOS setting.

Just curious, KK, what kind of bluetooth device were you trying to install?
Some generic USB device? I've not messed with bluetooth on a laptop or
PC.
Hardware issues can be perplexing, so going back to 'baseline' is checking
or toggling the bios settings. Figured from your description that laptop is
too new to lose the touchpad totally.
Glad that worked. Don't tell anybody, but I just guessed on this one. ;^)
