...think they had issues with Network Solutions. Or rather, vice versa. Something over accessing NS's whois server. Sam Spade results have been getting spotty the last few years.
Another good site is http://geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm. There's links to the major whois databases on down the page. I'm fascinated by their locator feature.

hmm thats strange. I happened to check earlier today and it said Back Soon. I was hoping you were correct in saying that it's back up, but I checked again a minute ago and it still says back soon for me? Strange...
...on the brighter side, Sam Spade's servers are back up and the app works again. edit - oops, spoke too soon. Won't whois ip addresses. Domain names, ok.
Hi BrokenCrow,
The arrow won't work if and until the spade app is set to accept data from the newer ARIN (or NetSol, I don't remember) configuration. A way around this is, set the server to geektools and use the Whois on the sidebar. See attachments.
I actually found this website looking for a SS replacement or news of its return.
don't know how relevant this info is but here goes anyway:
">>> Last update of whois database: Thu, 19 Jan 2012 20:18:20 UTC <<<
NOTICE: The expiration date displayed in this record is the date the
registrar's sponsorship of the domain name registration in the registry is
currently set to expire. This date does not necessarily reflect the expiration
date of the domain name registrant's agreement with the sponsoring
registrar. Users may consult the sponsoring registrar's Whois database to
view the registrar's reported date of expiration for this registration."
the high side of huge H/D's you can keep everything, why i even have 114 stored on this drive ;-), but i don't think it's ethical to offer it
