    BSC - computer science

    Hi All,

Does anyone have any thoughts on this degree, ive been looking at it for a while and not sure if I should go for it.

At the moment I do the support for an AV vendor and would like to move into the security field.

Would it be better caring on with say MCSE , CEH etc etc or go for a degree?

    Any thoughts appreciated!

    Thanks.

    Hi,

A degree is an academic qualification that lasts a lifetime. Certification is short term, as they have to be kept up to date.

Certificates are more job specific, so may get you specific employment more readily than a degree.

Have you considered an MBA? that plus certificates is a powerful combination, particularly if you have management ambitions

    Thanks for the reply Nihil.

Hmmm, not you have totally put me off course! Ill have to check up on it though. The thing with BSC touches on alot of things (programming, statistics etc) that are sort of interesting. yes I could do programming as a cert though.

But I will have a look, thanks again for the post

    do the degree
that one is a very good IT related across the spectrum
if you are doing a degree, getting MCSE / CCNA / C|EH will be a piece of peace

    as for security
get the degree with those certs, plus the pre-requisite time in job to gain real world experience
then add CISSP and CCSP to the mix

as for exam prep - CBT nuggets are the way
and transcender for exam practice worked for me

so now I'm in my SIXTIES FFS
WTAF, how did that happen, so no more alterations to the sig, it will remain as is now

    Sleep? wot dat?

Kidding aside, I went into a CS minor program having no idea that CS was programming. I failed out. Didn't realize until it was too late that I'm not a programmer, and I wanted the MIS minor program.

Hmm, the university I currently attend has programming in their information sciences curriculum as well. Its Java, but some people seem to have trouble with the whole object oriented thing? I don't know...maybe its just because I've been coding for so long...
