Password protecting USB / removable media

    Hi,
I would like to password protect my data on my USB stick. I could use Bitlocker but then I would need a windows 7 machine with bitlocker to unlock it. I did some searching and found some apps like truecrypt but it looks like you need the APP on the destination PC to unlock it.
I would like to be able to use it on all windows OS's and possibly unix.

    Any thoughts or tips appreciated.
P.S this is a standard USB stick, not secure or anything fancy.

Put the unencrypted app on the stick and encrypt the rest of the stuff.

    maybe change the file extension?

or use something like winRar, to .rar the contents using a non dictionary passphrase.

Because I am lazy, this is generally what I do. Basically, i have a protected rar file that just feels like a password protected directory. It works and is secure. And compressed =-)

You can use TrueCrypt in portable mode which should accomplish what you need. You can read about it here:

    http://www.truecrypt.org/docs/?s=truecrypt-portable
