Get 2FA, make sure to set all the security questions straight. Get warnings about unusual activity. And use LastPass or something close to that.

    1. Use a unique password that is a combination of Upper Case, Lower Case, Special Characters and Numbers
    2. Do not use the same password in other websites
    3. Enable Multi-Factor Authentication provided by Google
    4. Provide Recovery information to Google like Secondary email, phone number etc
    5. Use a password manager : https://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2407168,00.asp

2 factor authentification, make sure you use private networks and don't save your password anywhere. I would recommend using these tips not just for Gmail, but anywhere, like, you wouldn't want to risk being locked out of your world of warcraft gold selling account, wouldn't you?
