If you see people saying things like 1337 or |-|4X0r, what they really mean is a word that has been changed by successive uses by people who don't know how to spell. And some think it's sort of cool or write weirdly. For instance:

(31337 -> ELEET -> ELITE)
So people mis-spell it and swap letters for numbers and symbols which bear a superficial resemblance.
