You could always look to an alternative, calalyst makes a handy ocx called socket wrench, you can find it here. they have a pretty full featured OCX for free!!!!

I remember a few years ago when all I had was the learning edition of VB and this was the solution I used untill I could get my hands on a copy of VB that had winsock. Just my .02! Hope it helps
PS they have excellent support and samples/demos, it's def. worth a look!
